The sculptures really will be a conversation starter and attraction on our beach - the timber from the Old Jetty just shines with texture, colour and history, and the weathering it will get will add interest too I am sure.
Thanks to John Wills, our local artiste - his work is really commendable, and best wishes to the committee meeting with City of Albany to determine the best locations and to prepare a sculptures location plan.
We very much look forward to follow up art pieces with more of our timber. Please remember to donate to this great cause - cheques to Frederickstown Progress Association c/- Jan Waterman PO Box 1033,

Regarding the Calamari Restaurant (non-existent now) being taken up by one of the People lining up at the council doors hasn't happened. A close look should be taken when dealing with people where there is a conflict of interests. The way we see it is that Emu Point Cafe is unlikely to create a situation where they have competition for their popular cafe at the cost of huge extra expense, with the huge rental (non-existent now) and increased staffing costs. Any empty building will deteriorate sharply. Phrases like the Mayor taking things "on board" need to be seen to bear fruit. The council need to get their "talk and walk" in line with each other. I was advised by Jeremy Stewart in conversation, that the rental asking price was "Market Value". What is "market value"? In my book, it what people are prepared to pay and NOT the asking price. In reality, if it stands empty for a year ... do you ask for double the next eyar to make up for losses. MOST of the development on the Calamari site was not done with Council money. The tenant of a number of years ago, when it was known as "Beach Side Restaurant" developed the site from a kiosk into a a restaurant. This days it was used for weddings and the like. Not suitable for anything of any significance at present. BIG problem is that Middleton Beach area is being neglected in favour of the Council's favourite foreshore developments at the Princess Royal Harbour. Much better to push for a hotel there than a replacement for the Esplenade, even less to make the site attractive, or should we say "less unattractive".

The BIG issue is: Is there likely to be another restaurant on the site. I had assurances from the Mayor after I had written a letter to the Albany Advertiser expressing our concern. He assured me that there was a queue at the door waiting to take over the premises. That has not happened apart for a few weeks as a kiosk run by Emu Point Cafe. It was totally inadequate with the surf carnival where there were 5000 competitors. Recent comments were that "Middleton Beach is DEAD" and that came from a regular guest at our resort. There is zero sense of urgency regarding any development in Middleton beach including making the old Esplenade site look presentable. 2014 Anzac day will be upon us and the "eye sore" will still be there.

Hi Middleton Beach Group - Happy 2012!

Great photo of the Endeavour posted by Andrew Wenzel! Not many places can boast to have had this historic ship our its doorstep.

Just wait ti 2014 when all the Anzac fleet re-enactment happens - we will have front seat viewing! Wonder if we will still have the 'sandpit' to 'showcase' too?!?

Thanks to new MBG member Jane Singleton for taking up the blogspot training offer - good luck Jane S.

Soon there will be flyers about for our next MBG gathering - a bit of a catch up on local affairs, and socialising too. Bring new members and friends along to Ellen Cove at 5.00pm on Wednesday 15th February. BYO nibbles and drinks.

Please be encouraged to join the Frederickstown Progress Association for their first meeting of the year at the Boatshed from 5.30pm on Monday 13th February too.

Yours in community spirit

Hi Gordon and Sheryle
thank you for your comments re the Middleton Beach Plan - I will ensure that Jennifer Viol gets to read them, and also ask that City of Albany views such comments when/if they proceed with the completion of such a plan for the precinct.
Persoanlly I think there are better traffic calming options than speed humps but we will leave that to the 'experts - suffice to say - more traffic calming is needed!
We have a meeting coming up on Tuesday 10th May at 5.00pm aty HYBLA - the seaside cottage next to Castlereagh on Flinders Parade - please come along...

Unfortunately we have not been able to attend a Middleton Beach Group meeting as yet, however we have enjoyed reading ideas etc in the Precinct Planning Forum - Feedback.

We agree with retaining the Norfolk Island pines on the beachfront at all cost and would most certainly like to see a hotel or quality tavern with restaurant, alfresco, overlooking the beach with a tasteful beer garden to the rear allowing for music and a small dance floor.
Keeping the Beachfront soft with lots of open space and appropriate plantings ie grasses, shrubs and attractive shady trees that shed little or autumn only leaves. We like the mature peppermint trees but PLEASE NO MESSY INDIGENOUS TREES ie eucalypts and the like.

We would also like to see - A tennis court similiar to what was
                             behind the demolished Esplanade Hotel
                          - A beach pool
                          - More speed humps and continuing all the
way around Eyre Park to stop speeding
                             vehicles
                          - Dual cycle and walkway around Eyre Park
                          - More trees eg plane trees and
                             continuing these all the way
                             down Middleton Beach road to
                             roundabout opposite MB Caravan
                             Park to soften road
                          - Re-vamp area around and including
                             Calamaris.

Whilst we feel it is important to acknowledge our aboriginal cultural heritage it is also important to acknowledge all events to the present day and to plan for a modern, fresh, spacious and shady Middleton Beach precinct which includes places of play (children & adults), hotel/Tavern, cafes/dining, music, maybe a couple of shops ie newsagent, local giftware/art, accommodation and generally a place for relaxation with family and friends.
